Pepper spray, also known as OC spray (from "Oleoresin Capsicum"), OC gas, capsicum spray or Mace, is an effective means of quickly disabling an assailant so you can run for safety. The capsicum, derived from the chili pepper, will cause the person's eyes to shut as a response to the stinging spray.

It is used by law enforcement to quell unruly crowds or aggressive individuals. It is generally recognized as safe when used on healthy people. Delivery employees appreciate dog pepper spray because it is effective with no lasting after-effects. Hunters rely on Mace bear spray to resist the animal's threatening advances.
